DESCRIPTION

Return to the drama and intrigue of New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Hoyt’s Greycourt series with a breathtaking enemies-to-lovers historical romance!

Ambitious, sly, and lethally intelligent, Gideon Hawthorne has spent his life clawing his way up from the gutter. For the last ten years, he’s acted as the Duke of Windemere’s fixer, performing the duke’s dirty work without question. Now Gideon’s ready to quit the duke’s service and work solely for himself. But Windermere tempts Gideon with an irresistible offer: one last task for Messalina Greycourt’s hand in marriage.

Witty, vivacious Messalina Greycourt has her pick of suitors, so when her uncle demands Messalina marry Mr. Hawthorne, she is appalled. But Gideon offers her a devil’s bargain of his own: protection and freedom in exchange for a true marriage. Messalina feigns agreement and plots to escape their deal. Only the more time she spends with Gideon, the more her fierce, loyal husband arouses her affections. However, Gideon’s final deed for Windermere may be more than Messalina can forgive.

REVIEW

This book is an enemy to friends’ book with Messalina and Gideon as the primary characters who are forced to marry each other. Gideon’s last job for Messalina’s uncle to get his freedom has a steep price forcing Gideon to make a choice on what is more important to him. For someone who clawed his way out of St. Jiles there is only one choice and falling in love was never in his plans.

The storyline and all the characters were well developed and hard to predict, making this book a want to read in one sitting book.

Readers will be instantly attracted to Gideon because his character is deep and full of secrets that want to be solved. What I found so intriguing was how he feels about others in his employment and how he treats them. This is when the pieces of the storyline started to fit together for me.

Messalina is a surprise because she was feistier than I anticipated. The author developed her character giving her a kind spirit and a strong backbone which stood out in a scene between Messalina negotiating with Gideon before the marriage.

Secondary characters are many with some returning from Not the Duke’s Darling, Book 1 of this Greycourt series. One of the secondary characters shocked me at the ending as I was not expecting it. Will it shock you as well?
